Disciple: Week 6, Day 1

So today we read the 10 Commandments as outlined in Exodus AND Deuteronomy—again. That means that we’ve basically read the same thing for this study four times over.

Anyway, we’re supposed to compare the two passages. I don’t really see a lot different about them, except that in Deuteronomy, Moses spends more time reminding the people that God delivered them from Egypt:

"Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day." (Deuteronomy 5:12-15)

Contrast this to Exodus:

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." (Exodus 20:8-11)

I suppose this stuck out to me because last week was all about God’s deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. And I guess that by this point in Deuteronomy, the Israelites had probably already forgotten the miraculous deliverance from the Egyptians and therefore needed the reminder.

Yeah…There are some more thoughts percolating in my head, but I’m too tired to stay up and let them brew properly. More tomorrow! (Hopefully!)
